Introduction: Data collection out in the field is an important part of research in many social and environmental organisations. While collecting data on paper-based forms have many strengths – like being low-tech, inexpensive and versatile — analysing and summarising those data can be cumbersome due to challenges of digitising, quality checking and data security. Open Data Kit (ODK) provides a suite of free and open source tools to collect and manage data using Android devices and free or inexpensive back end tools. It allows for filling forms with a mobile app-like interface on questionnaires involving complex skip-logic that support answers with multiple choice, text, GPS location, multimedia, date, etc.
In this session, we will cover a broad overview of ODK and a hands-on practice session on how to build & deploy forms and collect field data using ODK & Google Drive/Sheets. We will explore using Google MyMaps to visualize collected data and learn about other Google tools that can be very useful in visualizing landscapes.
Prerequisites & requirements: There are no mandatory requirements, no coding experience needed. Prior familiarity & interest in field data collection for research purposes is desirable. An Android device, a Google account and basic familiarity with Microsoft Excel or Google Spreadsheets will be necessary to follow-along during the hands-on practice. Laptops are optional.
