Burning Waste

Over a crore people live in Bangalore, use things every day, and generate a lot of waste. Much of this waste is actually generated by the middle classes and the rich. Almost all of this waste is just dumped – in street corners, open grounds, lakes, and playgrounds. When we can't stand the sight of waste in our neighborhood, we just find a village to dump it in. Often times we just burn it. All this does terrible damage to human health, livestock and the environment. This waste also ends up in our lakes, forests and villages, destroying life and livelihoods. It also blocks out drains causing needless flooding. Bangalore, once the 'garden city', we have turned into a 'garbage paradise'.

There have been many efforts to tackle this problem over the decades. But such positive moves have found weak support from a careless population and a weak administration. Villagers, who have been dumped with our waste, have had enough of this mess and are turning the trucks back into Bangalore. This has forced us to think hard on how to find a way out of this massive everyday mess. Quite strangely, the solutions are so simple, it can be done by anyone, anywhere, and guess what, does not require 'experts'.

You are a big part of this solution. So come, figure out how to turn Bangalore back into a healthy city. Learn simple household and community methods to resolve the problem of Waste in Bangalore. And be ready to be surprised how much of this 'waste' is actually a resource, and material to have fun with too! In this workshop, be prepared to walk through landfills, 'waste' processing and recycling centres, and to learn how 'waste' can be made into manure, artwork, useful things and other fun things!

This workshop has been planned, designed and is directed by Swanuja Maslekar, a 16 year old like you. Swanuja is having fun working 'waste' into so much more.
